Questions

1. What are the advantages of shoot at a higher ISO at a sporting event like basketball or a night football game?

A higher ISO will make night photos look more clear.

2. What suggestions did the author make about using a low ISO?

The author suggested that I keep my camera at the lowest ISO setting possible in order to have the cleared photos, the only time I need a high ISO is if I am taking a photo at night.

3. What suggestions did the author make about using a high ISO?

Use high ISO for night photos or ultra fast shots ( if you are okay with a little noise in your photo).

Questions

1. Good/ Bright Light

At the beginning while the sun was still up and the courtyard had reasonable good light

a.) a booth in the middle of the yard near the Tree

I would use a high shutter speed to capture all of the details and movements at the booth.

b.) a food booth outside under one of the big red awnings

I would still use a high shutter speed but not as high as the speed i used for the first booth because it is darker under the big red awnings. Still high enough to have a clear photo and good lighting.

c.) the Stars performance inside the gym

I would use a higher shutter speed for this because I need to clearly capture them dancing meaning the shutter speed must be very high to keep up with their movements.

d.) students dancing near the center of the courtyard

I would need a pretty high shutter speed again to keep up with their movements, but not quite as high as the shutter speed I used in the gym because I want the natural light outside to still be balanced.

e.) people streaming in from the front doors

I would use a slow shutter speed to emphasize the speed and amount of people coming in the front doors. I would take this photo from the inside that way they are flowing in toward me.

f.) the basketball booth where students are shooting basketballs at a hoop

I would use a high shutter speed to capture students in the middle of shooting the basketball, so that you can clearly see the ball in the middle of going into the hoop.

2. Bad/Dark Light

Towards the end when there is no sun and has gotten dark enough that you can't see from one end of the courtyard to the other.

a.) a booth in the middle of the yard near the Tree

I would use a slow shutter speed with a flash to be able to clearly see the booth in the dark.

b.) a food booth outside under one of the big red awnings

I would use a shutter speed that is a little slower then the speed I used for the other booth because under the redwings will be a little darker than being out in the open.

c.) the Stars performance inside the gym

It would be the exact same settings as I used in the daytime because the lighting will stay the same inside the gym.

d.) students dancing near the center of the courtyard

I would use a shutter speed that is barely high enough to capture them dancing clearly but I would use the flash to brighten up the photo.

e.) people streaming in from the front doors

This photo would bet set exactly the same as the settings I used in the daytime because the light inside is the same and the photo is supposed to be blurry anyways.

f.) the basketball booth where students are shooting basketballs at a hoop

I would use a shutter speed barely high enough to clearly capture the ball going into the hoop but I would use the flash to make the photo brighter.

Shutter Speed Settings:

1. "Aperture Priority" mode automatically sets the shutter speed for you.

2. "Shutter Priority" mode automatically sets the aperture string while you manually set the shutter speed.

3. In "Manual" mode, you have to manually set the shutter speed and the aperture.

Academic Shoot Reflection and Critique

1. What challenges did you encounter while trying to get the photos following the rules I set out for you?

There were a lot of people who got distracted and tried to pose for the pictures. I also had trouble focusing a clear subject for my photos.

2. What technical aspects of photography or the assignment in general (focus, framing, holding the camera, etc.) did you find yourself thinking about the most? Provide a specific example of what you did to do this correctly.

I thought the most about levels, I needed to squat or crouch down to a certain level to get a good photo.

3. If you could do the assignment again, what would you do differently now that you know some basic rules of photography?

I would try to have a better main subject in my photos and I would try to find more interesting things to take pictures of.

4. What things would you do the same?

I would still focus on levels.

5. When you go out with your next set of prompts, which rule do you think will be the easiest to achieve?

Rule of thirds

6. Which rule do you think will be the hardest to capture?

Leading lines

7. What rule are you still not totally clear on and what can you do to figure out what that rule is?

Balance, I can go back to the website linked on the Bowie photojournalism blog that explains all of the rules.

  • The subject is very clear
  • Make sure nobody is cut out of your photos.

Photo Manipulation and Ethics

A. What are some of the main points you read about in the website above regarding manipulating images?
Manipulating images is more than just making someone look skinnier, but also getting rid of redeye and fixing lighting. A lot of magazines and commercial companies use photoshop to trick their viewers into seeing something totally different than the real thing. Photographers are starting to photoshop so much, that it is hard to tell what is real and what is fake. Nowadays, photographers are required to turn in a copy of the original photo as well as the edited version to assure that they are following the rules and not editing a photo too much.

B. What is the philosophy of newspapers like the Washington Post and the New York times regarding image manipulation?

The photographers have to follow strict guidelines on how to shoot and edit their photos.
C. What do you think are acceptable things you could do to an image and not cross the line unto an unethical manipulation?

You could fix the redeye, adjust the lighting, even out someones skin tone, etc. I would just stick to the way the lighting effects the photo and any unappealing, unnatural things in the photo (such as redeye).

D. Post the manipulation (this means get that image and post it on your blog) that you think was the most unethical, and explain why you think it was unethical. If you do not know what the word ethic or unethical means, look them up on the internet. It is very important you know what those two words mean. Please write at least 2-3 sentences explaining why you think it is so bad.

I think this photo is unethical because someone shouldn't go so far to photoshop their head on a completely different body just to make themselves look good. They could've at least redone the picture with her instead of completely lying to the public. That only makes them look bad.

E. Post the manipulation that you consider the least unethical, and explain why you think it is not as bad as others. Please write at least 2-3 sentences explaining why you think this one is not so bad.

uwmadison12

I think this photo is the least unethical because while it was wrong to photoshop a whole other person into a picture, they were doing it for a good cause. They didn't want black students to get angry or feel threatened that they weren't included (which they shouldn't feel that way), so they photoshopped one in.

Great Black and White Photographers 2

Paul Outerbridge
He was born on August 15, 1896 in New York.
He died on October 17, 1958 in California.
Paul went to school at Columbia University
He was a fashion and commercial photographer, he experimented a lot in color photography.
In 1945, Paul married a fashion designer named Lois Weir. The two worked together at their joint fashion company called "Lois-Paul Originals"
He died of Lung Cancer.
He has a few books about him: "Paul Outerbridge: A Single Aesthetic" and
"Paul Outerbridge: Command Performance"

This is a photo from my favorite photographer, Paul Outerbridge. I like his photos because he can take the most boring ordinary objects and turn it into something interesting using photography.

While this photo is colored, this is my favorite photo of his. This picture makes me happy, which I think is funny seeing that a collection of the most random objects put together could make someone feel like that.

Post Shoot Reflection

1. What challenges did you encounter while trying to get the photos of your first 4 prompts (Square, Metal, Happy, Bowie)

In the beginning of my photo shoot I had a little bit of trouble making my photos clear and focused, but i fixed my problem quickly. I also had trouble having a clear background.

2. What technical aspects of photography or the assignment in general (focus, framing, holding the camera, etc.) did you find yourself thinking about the most? Provide a specific example of what you did to do this correctly.

I thought a lot about having a clear photo and getting close to the subject of my photo. The picture I used for the "happy" prompt is my favorite photo because the flower is so clear you can see every detail of it, but i do wish it had a clearer background.

3. If you could do the assignment again, what would you do differently now that you know some basic rules of photography?

I would try to focus more on a simple background and rule of thirds, I would also like to try taking a photo with lines helping make my focus of the photo more clear.

4. What things would you do the same?

I would still take some clear close up photos because that is my favorite type of photo to take. I love it when a picture is so clear that you feel like you are there.

5. Finally - go back and edit your blogs with the 4 photos (square, metal, happy, Bowie), tell me what rules of composition (which you just learned about) did you end up actually achieving? Did you have any?

The only rule i noticed I followed was the lines rule, I used a lot of lines in my pictures to help bring out my main focus. I really need to work on having a clear, non distracting background.

6. Are you interested in shooting those same prompts again, why?

No, because the prompts we used didn't really give me a chance to take the types of pictures I like to take.

http://abbiesphotojournalismbl.blogspot.com/2017/09/prompt-shoot-1.html

  • Abbie has very clear, beautiful photos.
  • She is very good at following the rules of composition.
  • I do think that next time she should try to have a clear focus in her photos.

Avoiding Mergers

I chose this photo for avoiding mergers because the explosion is fully in the picture and no part of it is cut out of the frame, making this picture more appealing.

Framing

I chose this photo for framing because i believe the bridge framing the twin towers really enhances the main focus of the photo, it helps the towers "pop".

Balance

I chose this photo for balance because i believe there is an even distribution of things to look at throughout the whole photo, from the person to the flag.

Lines

I chose this photo for lines because the lines in this picture go the same direction as the person falling, i think the lines make this photo's meaning more dramatic.

Rule of Thirds

I have chosen this photo for rule of thirds because the main focus of the photo is off center, obviously following the rule of thirds. Also the height difference from the other buildings in this photo compared to the twin towers (the main focus) makes it even easier to focus on the main idea of the photo.

Simplicity

I have chosen this photo for simplicity because the main focus is very obvious. There is no distractions from the main focus and the background is simple and clear.
